Require Recommendations / References

Inserting Submission Requirements

Hard and soft fails can be added to an application through the Application Logic function within Slate.

  1. Select Database on the top navigation bar and select Application Logic.
  2. Select Insert.
  3. Enter the following configurations in the dialog box for each desired submission requirement:
    • Status: Set to Active.
    • Folder: Keep your records organized by putting them in a folder. Select Other to create a new folder.
    • Type: Set to Submission Requirement.
    • Name: Provide the text that will appear when the applicant is missing information.
    • Warning: Select Hard Fail or Soft Fail.
    • Group (optional): Add a Group here to quickly restrict the requirement to only the applicants who meet the group criteria you set up earlier. Slate will automatically include the filter criteria for the group in the requirement rule.
    • Base: Set to Applications.

Select the Light Bulb  for a complete listing of all setting descriptions.

Requiring a Certain Number of Recommenders

This submission requirement prevents submission of the application if the applicant has not entered the minimum number of recommenders.

Within the Application Logic configuration, set the following:
  • Section: Select the References page, which will begin as ref -
  • Filters
    • Recommendation Number by Status - Allows you to search for applications that have a certain number of recommendations that are either excluded, received, or requested.

  Why not excluded?

The Status of Excluded means that the applicant does not want the recommendation to be considered, so it will not be visible in Reader or on the Student Record. If you require a certain number of recommendations, Excluded recommenders should not be counted toward this minimum number. Requested and Received recommendations should both count toward this minimum number.

Who will see this submission requirement?

Applicants who have less than three recommenders entered on the References page.

Requiring Types of Recommenders

This submission requirement prevents submission of the application if the applicant has not entered the minimum number of recommenders based on the recommender type, or the minimum number of total recommenders.

Within the Application Logic configuration, set the following:
  • Section: Select your References page, which will begin as "ref -"
  • Filters
    • Recommendation Number by Status and Type - Allows you to search for applicants that have a certain number of recommendations that are either excluded, received, or requested, based on the type of recommendation.
    • Recommendation Number by Status - Allows you to search for applications that have a certain number of recommendations that are either excluded, received, or requested.

  Why both filters?

If you require at least three recommendations, where two must be from a teacher, use the Recommendation Number by Status filter to require the applicant to enter at least three recommenders. Add the Recommendation Number by Status and Type filter to require that at least two of the three recommenders are teachers.

Who will see this submission requirement?

Applicants who have less than three recommenders or less than two teacher recommenders entered on the References page.

Modify for Your Needs!

If your institution accepts multiple types of recommendations, use submission requirements to ensure that the minimum number of each type is entered.

Recommender Types can be created using a prompt list with a key of reference_type. For more information, refer to the Custom Recommendation Form article.
